Mega Millions Winner Sells $3 Million Ticket to Herself

March 25, 2014 – Glinda Salgado was excited to meet the lucky winner who purchased a second-prize winning Mega Millions ticket, with the Megaplier option added, at her family store in Herndon, Va.

The multi-million dollar winning ticket was sold for the March 14 Mega Millions drawing and matched the first five winning numbers drawn.  The second-prize winning ticket, normally worth $1 million, multiplied to $3 million thanks to the optional Megaplier.

But the winner never showed. ┬áThat’s when Salgado realized that she’d never checked her own ticket, one she bought at her own store ahead of the March 14 drawing, which featured a $353 million jackpot.

As it turned out, Salgado had herself chosen four of the five white numbers, randomly selecting the fifth number, which she matched, and the Mega Ball, which she missed.

“I didn’t think it was me, so I didn’t check my ticket,” Salgado told Lottery officials Monday as she received her $3 million prize.

The winning numbers in the March 14 drawing were 7, 20, 40, 54, 69 and the Mega Ball was 12.

Along with her $3 million prize, Salgado also accepted a $10,000 commission for the store, which they earned for selling the second-prize winning ticket.
