June 24, 2013 – Although nobody won Friday night’s $44 million Mega Millions jackpot, six players from California, Illinois, New Jersey and New York won second-tier prizes on the drawing.
All six players correctly matched the five white balls – 3, 14, 17, 40, and 50 – but missed the gold Mega Ball – 3.
It isn’t yet clear whether any of the winners in Illinois, New Jersey, or New York purchased the game’s Megaplier option, which adds a multiplier to prize amounts won.
The Megaplier ball drawn Friday was 3, which would make second-tier prizes normally worth $250,000 multiply to $750,000.
Because of California’s pari-mutuel lottery system, the Megaplier option is not offered in the state.
But Friday night’s second-tier winner from California likely doesn’t mind the state’s different payout system, because their Mega Millions prize was worth $729,017 before state and federal taxes.
Of the four other second-tier winners in the country, two are from Illinois, and one each are from New York and New Jersey. All four winners have one year to claim their prizes.
Ahead of Tuesday night’s drawing, the Mega Millions jackpot sits at $52 million – get your tickets, and good luck!
