Retiree Makes Georgia Lottery History

Oct. 2, 2013 – John Loper, a 70-year-old retired federal agent made Georgia history Sunday night when he won a Fantasy 5 jackpot worth $100,000.

It wasn’t a record jackpot, and as exciting as Loper’s second big lottery win was for him, that wasn’t Sunday’s historic event either.

Instead, Loper’s win was historic because he is the first Georgia Lottery player to have won a jackpot prize on a ticket purchased with the Georgia Lottery’s iHOPEcard.

He is also the first Georgia player to win a jackpot prize on a ticket purchased through the Georgia Lottery’s online service, which allows iHOPEcard cardholders to purchase Powerball, Mega Millions, and Fantasy 5 tickets over the internet.

The Georgia Lottery’s  iHOPEcard, which launched earlier this year, is a Discover debit card that can be used to buy lottery tickets both online or at the Georgia Lottery’s retail locations.  The card also works as a standard debit card, and can be used for day-to-day purchases.

Winnings less than $5,000 are deposited directly onto Georgia Lottery players’  iHOPEcards when the winning ticket was purchased with the special debit card, but prizes over $5,000 must still be claimed at a Georgia Lottery office.

To play online, Georgia Lottery players like Loper must sign up for a free  iHOPEcard account through mygalottery.com.

The free account gives players access to exclusive  iHOPEcard benefits, as well as the Lottery’s fantastic second-chance promotions and rewards program, on top of being the easiest way to play the Georgia Lottery’s biggest games.
