Oct. 17, 2013 – Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing did not make anyone $157 million richer, but it did make winners of nearly 700,000 Powerball players.
The six numbers drawn Wednesday night were 3, 26, 28, 34, 42 and the red Powerball was 28.
Three players missed Wednesday’s jackpot by only one number, managing to match all five white balls drawn. Two of those Match 5 winners, from Kansas and Massachusetts, will receive $1 million second prizes.
The third Match 5 winning ticket was sold in Sacramento, Calif. Because California plays the lottery on a pari-mutuel basis, where prizes depend on the number of people playing and winning, the Match 5 winner in California will receive a second prize worth $487,708.
Neither the Kansas or Massachusetts winners chose to add the Powerplay option to their tickets, which would have turned their $1 million second prize into a $2 million second prize for just an extra $1.
At the third prize level, just two players paid the extra $1 for Powerplay, meaning they’ll get $40,000 third prizes rather than the regular $10,000 prize value. 25 others matched four white balls and the Powerball for third prizes.
Altogether, 679,206 winners collectively raked in $7,380,919 in prizes Wednesday night. Ahead of Saturday’s drawing, the jackpot stands at $186 million, with a cash value of $106.3 million,
