Powerball Jackpot Claimed in Calif.

March 19, 2014 – Last week, while the Mega Millions jackpot was still growing towards $400 million, California’s newest Powerball jackpot winner headed into the California Lottery’s headquarters to collect his prize.

Joseph Saxer won his $60 million Powerball jackpot on the March 1 drawing, only about a week after another California player also won a jackpot prize.

That winner, who had the only winning ticket on the Feb. 19 drawing, has yet to come forward and claim her $425 million jackpot.

According to a press release from the California Lottery, Saxer arrived at Lottery headquarters last week and said that his $60 million win would not change him at all.

Lottery officials offered as proof of that statement Saxer’s own explanation of how he and his wife celebrated the big win.

“I took my wife to Carl’s Jr. and we got a buy-one-get-one-free of the, what they call the ‘Philly Cheese’,” Saxer said.  “We shared a Coke then went back home.”

Along with Saxer there were seven other new millionaires made in the March 1 drawing, including four players who won $2 million playing Powerball with Power Play.

It’s probably a safe bet that Saxer’s was the most modest of all the new millionaire’s celebrations.

The California Lottery did not say whether Saxer took the $60 million annuity prize or chose the cash option for his jackpot, which would be worth about $34 million.
