Not As Simple As It Sounds: How to Play Powerball

Playing Powerball is straightforward enough, but for people who don’t know how to get a ticket, choose numbers, and check for winnings, the whole process can seem daunting.  Asking for help feels just as strange, because playing shouldn’t be hard, right?

As we’ve all learned at some point, there’s more to the game than just winning and losing.  Sure, you can go to a lottery retailer and say “I’ll take a Powerball ticket, please,” and walk out holding your potential prize, but many people don’t know about, or are intimidated by other ways to play.

The bet slip is your friend – even though it looks like something you’d take a test on, don’t be fooled.  The bet slip lets you pick your own numbers or choose the Quick Pick option on up to five “plays”.  You can also choose to add the Power Play option, which costs an extra $1 but doubles, triples, or even quadruples any non-jackpot prize amount.

Powerball’s FAQ webpage says that 70 to 80 percent of jackpot winners have won on Quick Pick tickets, but part of the fun for many people is choosing lucky numbers.

Some people see them in dreams, others use memorable dates, and still more players bet on the numbers that come out of a fortune cookie.  If you, like so many lottery players, want to play those lucky numbers for every drawing, the bet slip can make life a little easier with a little box that says something like “Multi Draw”.

The Multi Draw box, next to the first play area, allows you play the same numbers for up to 26 drawings.  Paying ahead of time, you do run the risk of forgetting that you’ve got a horse in the race, so to speak.  Don’t forget to check your tickets after each drawing, or at the very least within your state’s specified claiming period.

Each state has a different claiming period, so check your state lottery’s website, or give them a call to find out.  Most vary from 90 to 180 days.

Finally, while playing doesn’t have to be more than buying a ticket and scanning it later, watching the drawings is exciting – even if you don’t end up matching any numbers.  With nine ways to win, and guaranteed money if you match the Powerball, you can hold your breath right up until the sixth ball is drawn.

Not near a TV – no worries!  LotteryHUB has a mobile app for iOS and Android that lets you watch the drawings live, in the palm of your hand, wherever you are.  Know you’re a millionaire the minute your life changes for good, just try not to scream too loudly, or you’ll have too many new friends to count.

Playing Powerball should be fun, so don’t forget that the odds are stacked heavily against you.  Don’t spend more than you can budget for fun, and don’t let losing make you feel you should have bought more tickets – play responsibly!
