Jan. 12, 2015 – For one lucky New York couple, 2015 is the start of a whole new life. The winner of November’s $326 million Mega Millions jackpot came forward Monday to claim his prize.
Harold Diamond, 80, of Wurtsboro, N.Y., arrived at a Valero gas station in style Monday, stepping out of a limousine along with his wife, Carol.
The lucky couple were greeted at the gas station by a crowd of reporters, then introduced by the New York Lottery’s Yolanda Vega.
Carol Diamond said the pair bought the lucky Mega Millions ticket after bad weather cut short a trip to nearby Middletown.
The next day, Harold heard from a cashier that someone had purchased the single winning ticket in Circleville, N.Y., but didn’t have the winning ticket handy to check.
So the jackpot realization had to wait until he got home. “I put on Cable 6… and I saw the numbers. I saw the first five numbers, so I immediately knew we won a million,” Diamond said.
“When I saw the last number, I yelled up to my wife ‘I think we just won a few bucks,” he said, drawing laughter from the crowd on hand.
The couple said they passed the ticket back and forth, double and triple-checking until they were sure of the big win.
Diamond said that he’d like to take Carol on a trip to Hawaii to celebrate their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary, but didn’t mention any other plans for the windfall.
The winning numbers Diamond matched in the Nov. 4 drawing were 9, 15, 24, 39, 41 and the Mega Ball was 1.
