June 12, 2013 – Kate Wheless, a waitress from Bunn, N.C., won a total of $1,000,015 yesterday with North Carolina’s Monopoly scratch-off game.
Wheless bought two of the $10 Monopoly tickets and said she was “feeling pretty good” after winning $15 on the first ticket, but she was about to feel a whole lot better.
“I scratched off the second one and I couldn’t believe it. I looked at it over and over,” Wheless said.
She chose to take her prize in a one-time lump sum of $600,000, which will be worth just over $400,000 after taxes.
She told the North Carolina Lottery that she plans to buy a car for herself and one for her fiance with the money
The Monopoly scratch-off game features tickets at four price points – $1, $2, $5, and $10 – and allows players to enter non-winning tickets into monthly second-chance drawings with prizes up to $10,000.
Every entry into a monthly drawing is automatically entered into the Monopoly Super Entry Drawing, which will feature a $1 million grand prize.
