Jan. 6, 2014 – The Mega Millions jackpot was won by a single ticket matching all six numbers drawn Friday night. The $61 million jackpot had rolled over just four times after the near-record-breaking $648 million jackpot was won Dec. 17.
Friday’s jackpot-winning ticket was sold in Tennessee and matched the numbers 22, 24, 25, 40, 70, and the Mega Ball, 5. The $61 million jackpot carries with it a cash value of $32 million before taxes. The big win is the first Mega Millions jackpot won in Tennessee, and also marks the first jackpot won in 2014.
Along with the new year’s first jackpot winner, one player scored the first $5 million second prize of the year playing Mega Millions with Megaplier.
The second prize ticket with the Megaplier option included was sold in in Philadelphia, Penn. The lucky player managed to match the first five numbers drawn, but missed the Mega Ball.
Lucky for them, Friday’s Megaplier was 5x, the highest multiplier that can be drawn, so the lucky Pennsylvanian scored $5 million, the highest non-jackpot prize players can win under Mega Millions’ new format.
According to a Mega Millions press release, that is only the second $5 million prize won since the game switched to the new format in October.
More than $8.3 million in non-jackpot prizes were won Friday night, collected by more than 1.3 million winning tickets.
Since the jackpot was won again, the top prize resets to its $15 million starting point for Tuesday’s 11 p.m. drawing, the prize carrying an $8 million cash value.
