Mega Millions Jackpot Won in California

April 6, 2014 – For the third time in as many weeks a lucky Mega Millions ticket matched all six numbers to win the jackpot.  Friday night, a Mega Millions player in California won an estimated $30 million jackpot prize.

The winning numbers drawn Friday were 1, 10, 15, 41, 54 and the Mega Ball was 9.  The Megaplier number drawn was 2x, so players who added the Megaplier option to their tickets and won a prize will receive double the normal prize value.

The jackpot-winning ticket was purchased at a Century City gas station on Santa Monica boulevard in Los Angeles, Calif.  The winner – or winners – will have their choice between the estimated $30 million annuity prize or the cash option, which is worth about $16 million before taxes.

Another big winner in California matched the first five numbers drawn to win a second prize.  Because California pays Mega Millions prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, where non-jackpot prize values will vary based on the number of players and winners, that second prize is worth about $233,000 before taxes.

One ticket sold in Georgia also matched the first five numbers to win a $1 million second prize.

There were 26 winners who matched four white numbers and the Mega Ball to win third prizes, including two players who added the Megaplier option to their tickets.  Those two players won $10,000 prizes; the other 24 third-prize winners will receive $5,000 prizes.

Altogether there were nearly 1.3 million winning Mega Millions tickets Friday night, earning players more than $4.5 million in prize money.  About 150,000 players added the Megaplier option to their tickets and won more than $500,000.

The $30 million jackpot win is the third in three weeks, following a $20 million prize won in New York on March 25 and a $414 million prize split by Florida and Maryland winners March 18.

Tuesday night’s jackpot has reset to its $15 million starting point, with a cash value worth about $8 million.
