Mega Millions Jackpot Winners Claim Prize in Florida

Apr 30, 14 Mega Millions Jackpot Winners Claim Prize in Florida

April 30, 2014 – The Florida Lottery announced yesterday that Merritt Island residents Raymond Moyer and Robyn Collier, both 35, had claimed the first-ever Mega Millions jackpot won in the state.

Collier and Moyer actually won half of a $414 million prize on Tuesday, March 18, 2014.  Their share was worth $207 million.

The two came to the Lottery as representatives of the Cobie and Seamus Trust Dated April 21, 2014 and chose the lump-sum, cash option for their $207 million prize.  Before taxes, they’ll receive about $115.4 million.  Collier and Moyer did not say if there were other members of the trust, so it is not clear if the prize will be split up among any other members.

For their part, Collier and Moyer said the winnings are “…an incredible blessing that will allow us to do many things we would not have had the opportunity to do before.”

They told Florida Lottery officials that they knew they’d won the day after the drawing.  Collier checked their numbers during the morning news and realized they’d matched all six, but Moyer was skeptical when she told him the good news.

“I didn’t believe her until I saw the store where we purchased the ticket on the news,” he said, adding that “it was definitely a shock.”

For six weeks they held onto the lucky ticket they bought from a Sunoco store, located at 6o0 South Courtenay Parkway in Merritt Island.  As the lottery advises winners do, they took that time to set up a trust and get ready for the windfall that awaited them Tuesday.

Now that they’ve redeemed their ticket for cash, the two said they would invest, travel, and go to as many Notre Dame football games as they can.

The Sunoco store that sold them their lucky ticket also won a prize: a $100,000 commission for selling Florida’s first Mega Millions jackpot-winning ticket.

The other half of the $414 million Mega Millions prize has yet to be claimed.  The other winning ticket for the March 18 drawing was sold in Maryland.
