Dec. 11, 2013 – Four hundred million dollars. The Mega Millions jackpot rolled over again Tuesday night, rolling to the second-highest prize value ever in Mega Millions history, and the fifth-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history.
There’s still a long way to go though – $257 million – before the $656 million Mega Millions behemoth that now holds the record for largest U.S. jackpot can be surpassed. But, with each rollover, millions of players become winners.
Tuesday night, almost 5.2 million players matched one of nine winning combinations of Tuesday’s winning numbers: 5, 12, 22, 41, 65 and the Mega Ball 13.
About 400,000 of those players chose to add the Megaplier option to their tickets. Tuesday’s Megaplier was 2x, meaning that non-jackpot prizes are worth double their normal amount.
While nobody was able to match all six numbers for the $344 million jackpot Tuesday, five players did manage to match the five white balls drawn to win second prizes.
Two of those new millionaires are from Ohio, and the rest come from Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey. None of those five big winners chose to add the Megaplier option to their tickets, so they’ll all receive the normal $1 million second prizes.
Nine out of an amazing 87 third-prize winners did choose to spend an extra $1 on Megaplier, and because they did, they scored $10,000 prizes while the 78 other third prize winners won $5,000.
All these big wins per drawing are thanks to “jackpot fever” which is enticing more and more players with each jackpot rollover. Now that Friday’s jackpot is worth $400 million with a cash value of $216 million, that “fever” won’t abate until the top prize is taken.
Be sure to get your Mega Millions tickets before Friday night’s 11 p.m. drawing. Now is the perfect time to increase your chances of winning a prize, so consider putting together an office pool or covering all of the Mega Ball numbers to guarantee a $1 win (at least).
Winners Tuesday night scored almost $15 million in total prize money, so don’t miss out on your chance to get in on the winnings. Remember, you can’t win if you don’t play; good luck Friday night!
