Dec. 13, 2013 – Mega Millions players all across the country are counting on this Friday the 13th being lucky for a change, and have been flocking to Lottery retailers to pick up tickets for tonight’s drawing.
Thanks to strong ticket sales ahead of the drawing, which will be held at 10:59 p.m. EST, the Mega Millions jackpot has grown from an estimated $400 million to $425 million.
The cash value of the prize, which represents how much has actually been spent on tickets during the current jackpot run, has reached an astounding value of approximately $228 million.
Reports from the Associated Press claim that about 32 percent of all possible number combinations for the Mega Millions game have been sold ahead of the Friday night drawing.
Should the jackpot roll over again, it will continue to climb up the list of highest jackpot values in U.S. history. The $425 million jackpot sits at number five on that list today, and would need to grow by more than $200 million to top a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot that holds the number one spot.
“Jackpot Fever,” the term used to describe nationwide excitement over life-changing lottery sums, also prompted Mega Millions officials to re-estimate the jackpot value before last Friday’s drawing. It grew by just $6 million then, just more than 20 percent of the increase announced today.
