Feb. 24, 2014 – Last Thursday was a lucky day for Wiley Tuley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Tuley bought 14 tickets for Thursday’s Pick 4 drawing and won $200,000 thanks to “a little science.. and a little luck,” he said.
Tuley, 70, told the Iowa Lottery that even though lottery games are random players need to “just execute a plan. That’s what I did, and it worked.”
He told the Lottery his plan was worked out to deliver $200,000 if his lucky numbers – 1, 9, 4, 3 – came up.
Tuley’s plan worked after he matched his numbers last Thursday to win 32 prizes worth $6,000, two prizes worth $3,000 and eight other prizes worth $250 for the $200,000 grand total.
He told the Lottery that he doesn’t play those numbers every day, but if the winning numbers on a certain day meet his criteria, he’ll play one of his lucky number sets the next day.
Three of his birth-year numbers came up in Wednesday’s drawing, so Tuley decided to play Thursday – which turned out to definitely be a good decision.
This isn’t the first time Tuley’s strategy for the game has paid off in a big way, either. The retired electronics technician won two prizes worth $12,000 each on the July 11, 2009 Pick 4 drawing.
He also won a total of more than $9,000 between two drawings in January and February of 2010.
Tuley told the Lottery that he did have an idea of what he’d do with the money, though he wouldn’t say what he was planning, just that after collecting his prize Friday he was most looking forward to surprising his wife, Carol with the news of his biggest win yet.
