Sept. 6, 2013 – In the past week, we’ve seen the Powerball jackpot grow by $61 million, climbing over $200 million after nobody matched all six numbers Wednesday night.
As summer draws to its official end, this big jackpot is the perfect way to extend your summer to a life-long vacation, so don’t forget to buy your tickets before it’s too late tomorrow night.
Monday marked the un-official end of summer, as we all celebrated Labor Day before heading back to a shortened work-week Tuesday. Labor Day also means that the kids (mostly) are back in school, so naturally it’s time to start thinking about the next holiday, Halloween.
And like drugstores, costume shops and shopping malls, state lotteries are getting in on the Halloween spirit early. Seven states have announced they’ll be participating in a multi-state raffle timed perfectly for Halloween.
Sales for the Halloween Raffle – simply the Millionaire Raffle in some states – will begin at different dates in September,
but all seven states currently participating will stop selling tickets on Halloween night.
The drawing for the Raffle will be held Nov. 1, and will make at least one millionaire in each of the states playing.
Considering new games, the Hoosier Lottery’s newest game, Poker Lotto, has gotten off to a very good start. In its first ten days, Poker Lotto handed out more than half a million dollars in prizes to about 150,000 adventurous Hoosier Lottery players.
The New Jersey Lottery has made an effort to write a few more checks this month as well, announcing that their “Red Ball” promotion would be back for the month of September, doubling prizes on Pick 3 and Pick 4 drawings.
The Red Ball guarantees that at least once a week, Pick 3 and Pick 4 winners will get twice the prize money at any prize level. Read more about it in this post.
And finally, celebrating “back to school” was particularly exciting for one Iowa town after a lottery-winning couple announced they’d be helping to pay for a new football stadium for the local high school.
Brian and Mary Lohse won $202 million from the Iowa Lottery in 2012 after hitting a Powerball jackpot. The couple said they’d be donating $3 million to expedite construction on the new football stadium, with an eight lane track and seating for 2,000, in the Bondurant-Farrar school district. Construction should be finished by the beginning of the next school year.
