LotteryHUB Weekly Review

Dec 05, 14 LotteryHUB Weekly Review

Dec. 5, 2014 – Welcome back from Thanksgiving!  Hopefully you had a long weekend like the LotteryHUB team, but now we’re all back and with us comes another LotteryHUB Weekly Review.

The first week of December has been exciting!  At the tail end of November, one player in Washington won a $90 million Powerball jackpot, and the lucky winner has already claimed her prize.  More on that in the Weekly Jackpot Update below.

And since the twelfth month is here and 2014 is almost gone, we’ve started doing some counting.  This week on the LotteryHUB app, we tallied up the luckiest states and the luckiest types of retailers in the country.  You can find those videos below in the Weekly Game News.

Also in Game News, one New Yorker had better hurry, there’s less than a week until a big prize goes from lucky to lost.

But before we get to that, let’s look back at this week’s jackpot happenings.

Weekly Jackpot Update

The Mega Millions jackpot is fast closing in on the $100 million mark.  Tonight’s Mega Millions drawing will feature an estimated $80 million jackpot with a $49 million cash value.

Though the jackpot rolled over again Tuesday night, it made winners of about 1.27 million players who together won more than $3.1 million in non-jackpot winnings.

Saturday was a fairly lucky night as well, making 1.1 million winners who together won about $2.5 million in non-jackpot prizes.

Unfortunately, however, there were no new millionaires made in either drawing, so keep your fingers crossed when you pick up your tickets or watch the drawing tonight – someone has to break the new millionaire dry spell.

That wasn’t a problem for Powerball this week – along with the jackpot winner in Washington there were three other millionaires made in Virginia, New Mexico and Rhode Island, and a fourth second-prize winner in California.

All of those big wins came Saturday night along; about 400,000 other Powerball players won prizes and the drawing’s total payout was more than $8 million.

Saturday’s drawing reset the jackpot to its $40 million starting point, and the top prize rolled again Wednesday night, reaching an estimated $50 million ahead of Saturday’s drawing and making about 315,000 winners along the way.

Just as we were posting our jackpot recap Thursday morning, Lisa Quam was preparing to claim the $90 million jackpot prize she won last Saturday night.

The Washington native told reporters at a press conference Thursday that the $90 million ticket was the first Powerball ticket she’d ever purchased, and she bought the big winner while making a quick Thanksgiving Day shopping run.

Since learning of her big win Sunday night, both Quam and her husband have decided to retire.  They’ve got a few tentative plans for the money but one thing is for sure: it’s time for a new set of wheels.

Read the Quam’s whole story right here.

Weekly Game News

Let’s start this week’s Game News with a sense of urgency: check your tickets!!

A Powerball ticket worth $1 million is about to expire.  The lucky ticket was purchased in New York for the Dec. 11, 2013 drawing, and if the winner doesn’t claim their prize by next Thursday, a million dollars will vanish.

Click here to find out exactly where the ticket was sold and what the winning numbers were for the Dec. 11, 2013 drawing.

In other news, it’s looking like California has the most jackpot winners this year, but does that make them the luckiest state of all?

Maybe not.  Watch the video below or click here to watch on YouTube and let us know what you think in the comments.

Finally, where do you buy your lottery tickets?

We wanted to see if one type of retailer was “luckier” than another, so we took a look at this year’s jackpot wins and where the lucky tickets were sold.

Check out the video below to see what our tally revealed, but add one more supermarket to the list, that’s where Lisa Quam picked up her $90 million Powerball ticket.
