Jan 17, 14 LotteryHUB Weekly Review

Jan. 17, 2014 – Happy Friday, folks, and welcome to the LotteryHUB Weekly Review.  This week, the Powerball jackpot narrowly escaped the Wednesday night drawing, Mega Millions continued its climb towards more exciting numbers, and state lotteries began moving away from holiday promotions in earnest.

Your LotteryHUB app saw some changes this week as well, most notably the addition of more prizes for LotteryHUB Rewards drawings, be sure to check out the new prize offerings to plan your entries.

Weekly Jackpot Update

This week set the foundation for an exciting Powerball run, after the winning numbers drawn Wednesday all fell within the range of “birthday number” possibilities.

The winning numbers – 7, 8, 9 , 24, 29 and the Powerball, 25 – were low enough that players playing family members’ birthdays – a popular strategy – were much more likely to match a winning combination of numbers.

Still, the jackpot survived, rolling to $113 million ahead of Saturday’s drawing.  Thanks to the low numbers, nearly half a million players won a prize including three new millionaires and 46 third-prize winners.

Saturday’s drawing is the last day that Power Play will act as a fixed variable; starting with next Wednesday’s drawing, Power Play will be drawn from a separate drum.

Players who choose to add Power Play to their tickets will have their non-jackpot prizes multiplied anywhere from two to five times the normal prize value, depending on what Power Play number is drawn.

For those players who win a second prize by matching the first five numbers drawn, however, Power Play tickets will automatically be worth $2 million, no matter the multiplier drawn.

For Mega Millions players. this week has so far been a good one.  The jackpot rolled over Tuesday night, reaching $41 million ahead of tonight’s drawing and making 1.2 million players winners.

For two Mega Millions, this week was particularly good.  Bettina Still and her son Jonathan claimed their $61 million Mega Millions jackpot from the Tennessee Lottery, which they won on the Jan. 3 drawing.

Tonight’s $41 million Mega Millions annuity jackpot carries with it a cash value of about $22 million, and Saturday’s estimated $113 million Powerball jackpot has a cash value worth about $63.2 million.

Dont forget to get your tickets before sales close for Mega Millions tonight and for Powerball tomorrow.

Remember to save your Powerball tickets into the LotteryHUB app, and we’ll check your numbers for you after the drawing.  If it looks like you’re a winner, we’ll send you an email to let you know.

Weekly Game News

This was just the second full week of the new year, and since the holidays were just a few short weeks ago, Lottery holiday contests are still winding down.

This week, the grand prize winner from the Montana Millionaire Raffle came forward to claim their prize, leaving, out of the top prizes awarded, only two $10,000 prizes waiting to be claimed.

The winner is Russell Miller from Kalispell, and he told Lottery officials that he knew he’d scored the million-dollar prize just three days after the Montana Millionaire drawing.  He took the next week-and-a-half to put together a game plan, one he said he’d been dreaming up for a long time.

As one holiday season ends, another is just beginning in Oregon.  This week, the Oregon Lottery opened sales for it’s St. Patrick’s Day Raffle, the next in the Lottery’s ever-popular series of Raffles.

In just five days, the Lottery sold more than 25,000 of the 250,000 tickets printed, and fully expect that, like every other Raffle they’ve held, the St. Patrick’s Day Raffle will sell out well before the drawing.

Some notable games were released this week across the country, including a $25 scratch-off in New York that offers players chances to win a $7.5 million top prize, and a $30 game released in Ohio – now their most expensive – with $10 million top prizes and 35 $1 million second prizes.

(Of all the games released this week, I’m most excited to see how well-received Vermont’s newest ticket is.  Starting today, Vermont Lottery players will see their favorite characters from Family Guy, the popular cartoon, on a series of scratch-offs.)
