July 9, 2013 – Last night, after an impressive 31 jackpot rollovers, the Jersey Pick 6 draw game from the New Jersey Lottery was finally won on a single ticket.
The lucky ticket holder won the $10.5 million jackpot by matching all six numbers 10, 12, 21, 27, 32, and 43.
This Pick 6 jackpot is noteworthy not because it’s near record highs, but rather because the 31 rollovers didn’t produce a jackpot like those seen in the past.
In fact, two jackpots last year rolled over for about the same amount of time and reached values of more than $20 million.
And the record jackpot for Pick 6, a $48.9 million prize won in February 2001, started its run for the record only three months before.
In those three months the jackpot only rolled over 26 times – five fewer rollovers than yesterday’s $10.5 million win.
Even more astonishing, that 26-draw run to the record came right after a 26-draw, 3 month run to a record. That jackpot, from October 2001, was $46.2 million.
Since 2001, the New Jersey Lottery has seen many changes which probably contributed to the shrinking size of Pick 6 jackpots.
In 2002, Mega Millions was introduced in New Jersey, replacing the outdated multi-state Big Game. Then in 2010, New Jersey joined in Powerball action, further widening draw game options for its players.
With more game choices and bigger jackpots from the multi-state games, there’s less money in the pot for Pick 6 winners – let’s hope Monday’s winner is satisfied with $10.5 million.
