Three New Millionaires in One Week in W.Va.

Feb. 18, 2014 – West Virginia Lottery officials have a lot of $1 million checks to write after the past week of Powerball and Mega Millions drawings. While everyone else in the nation is hoping to hit the $400 million Powerball jackpot, three lucky winners in West Virginia became millionaires over the course of one week. A ticket sold for the Saturday, Feb. 8 Powerball matched all five white numbers drawn, winning a $1 million prize that was claimed Tuesday by “The Beckley 27”. Represented by Diana Slone and Lisa Stadelman at the Lottery offices today, “The Beckley 27” are a group of co-workers who missed the jackpot by one number – literally – in the Feb. 8 drawing. “We matched every number on the ticket, except for the Powerball, and we were only one digit away from winning the jackpot,” Stadelman told Lottery officials during a press conference. The Powerball that Saturday night was 29; the group had 28. Last Wednesday, West Virginia Lottery history was made when another $1 million Powerball prize was won.  It was the first time that the Lottery had back-to-back $1 million Powerball wins. That prize, sold in Wheeling, W.Va., has yet to be claimed. The third millionaire in the recent lucky streak to hit the state was Randy Brown, who won his $1 million prize on the Feb. 7 Mega Millions drawing. Even if you don’t match the red Powerball Wednesday night, you could still be a new millionaire, so check your tickets carefully (or save them into your LotteryHUB app and we’ll check them for you) – Powerball has made an average nine millionaires per week since 2012!   Photo Credit: DeviantArt User 2bgr8stock.  Licensed Under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0...

W. Va. Winners, Strangers, Choose to Share Prizes

Jan. 10, 2014 – Three men chosen as finalists in the West Virginia Lottery’s $1 Million Dollar Monopoly Millionaire second chance contest shocked lottery officials and the media when they announced Thursday they would be sharing the prizes evenly, after meeting only just before the prizes were awarded. Josh Schoolcraft, Douglas Schafer and Todd Kingrey were chosen as the three finalists in the Lottery’s Monopoly second chance promotion, which offered a $1 million grand prize, a $100,000 second prize and a $10,000 third prize.  Each of the three men had to choose from envelopes; hidden inside were checks showing one of the three prize amounts. Josh Schoolcraft, a 21-year-old resident of Given, W. Va., chose first, and when the three opened their envelopes, his was written out in the amount of $1 million.  Then, Schoolcraft stunned the crowd. “I just want to announce that I am going to share the money with the others,” he said. Kingrey, who drew the $100,000 prize, and Shafer with his $10,000 prize also said they’d be sharing their winnings, a plan Shafer said they’d all agreed to just before revealing their hidden prizes. “We thought this would be a good way to make sure not one of us leaves unhappy,” Schafer said during a press conference.  He added that he thought the decision showed “true West Virginia spirit.” After divvying up the winnings between themselves, each of the three men walked away from the Lottery’s headquarters with about $253,450 after...
