Louisiana Lottery Exceeds Own Profit Expectations

Aug. 13, 2013 – The Louisiana Lottery said in a press release Monday that it had generated $447.3 million in revenue in fiscal year 2013, and exceeded its own profit projections for the year by more than $26 million. The Louisiana Lottery’s profits are deposited into the state treasury each year to be used for K-12 educational programs.  In FY ’13, the Lottery’s contribution was $160.2 million, the second-highest return to Louisiana in the Lottery’s history. Lottery President Rose Hudson said she was “…pleased that the Lottery continues to live up to its mission to maximize revenue for our state.” “This is what happens when you take two record Powerball jackpots and combine them with scratch-off sales that are running $30 million higher than they were just five years ago,” she said, commenting on this year’s success. Since Powerball made changes to increase the size of jackpots, several lotteries have seen considerable sales boosts.  In FY ’13, two jackpots climbed past the half-billion dollar mark – a $587.5 million jackpot in November 2012 and a $590.5 million jackpot in May 2013 – fueling frenzied ticket sales. The Louisiana Lottery said that those two jackpots contributed to a $13 million rise in draw-game revenues over FY ’12. Coupled with strong sales of instant tickets, the Lottery’s better-than-expected revenues generated about $4  million more for education than last year – about a 2.5 percent increase. “This past fiscal year’s results have certainly given us a reason to smile,” Hudson said, adding that she’s “equally as excited about the future,” and finding ways to continue the Lottery’s 22 years of success. Since getting its start in 1991, the Louisiana Lottery has generated more than $7 billion in revenues, returning about $2.7 billion to the state...

Wrong Number on Louisiana Lottery Drawing Show

August 1, 2013 – The Louisiana Lottery released a statement Thursday morning saying that it had discovered a mistake made on the July 24 Easy 5 drawing show, and that the television show had reported one incorrect number. The numbers drawn for the Easy 5 that night were 4, 7, 31, 35, 36, but the television program reported the first number as a “5”, rather than a “4”. The show is produced by Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB), who had not yet released a statement regarding the error Thursday afternoon. The president of the Louisiana Lottery, Rose Hudson, said “The Lottery deeply regrets the error and the inconvenience it caused players who rely on the show to get the winning numbers.” After each drawing, lottery numbers go through a series of checks to ensure the accuracy of the reports.  Both a legislative auditor and a drawing official from the Lottery verify the number, which are faxed to LPB and then confirmed by telephone. According to the Lottery’s statement, their website reported the correct numbers for the Easy 5 drawing that night. Rose explained that the winning numbers confirmed by the auditor and Lottery official at the time of the drawing “are controlling in situations like this.” “Players who relied upon the TV show to check their Easy 5 tickets should recheck their ticket to determine any winnings,” Hudson...

Boogie to the Bayou State for the Swamp Pop Music Festival July 19 & 20

The Louisiana Lottery is ready to jam to some true Cajun style music at the 2013 Swamp Pop Music Festival July 19 & 20 in Baton Rouge. Grab your saxophones and get ready to listen to some real Swamp Pop music at the 15th Annual Swamp Pop Music Festival. This festival includes music, food, and more for everyone to enjoy the best of the cajun lifestyle and culture. Swamp Pop music is a mix of Cajun, Creole, Rhythm nd Blues, Rockabilly, Hillbilly, and Rock-n-Roll for a style all its own. In a trend that started in the 1950’s, when rock music began to take over, a few Louisiana teenagers mixed the feel of their favorite artists with the style of true cajun music, and a new genre was born. This new music was just like classic cajun music with a more rockin’ flair to it. While its peak of popularity was in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, swamp Pop has maintained a commonplace in Louisiana. To get the full feel of this musical style, come out to the festival to see the best of this cajun-born music. Along with two days of live bands, the music festival will have more fun for all attendees. There will be a car show, jambalaya cook-off, festival pageant, and include appearances by Don Rich, Van & Grace Kenny Fife, and more! The entire event will take place at  the Lamar Dixon Expo Center, and entry is only $10 on Friday and $15 on Saturday to enjoy the fun, food and music in the fully air-conditioned venue. The Louisiana Lottery will be sponsoring the event as well as be featured with ways for all attendees 18 and older to win. The Louisiana Lottery sponsors events throughout the state to raise revenue for the State Treasury in an attempt to give back to the state. The Swamp Pop Music Festival will also benefit others, with proceeds going to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. So come out and see what true...
