Calif. Lottery Sending Winner to The French Laundry

Dec. 16, 2014 – Lottery players dream of winning all sorts of things, but dinner at one of the most posh restaurants in the country may not be what you’d expect to find at the top of those jackpot wish lists. But the California Lottery is offering just that once-in-a-lifetime experience players can win through a special contest for the scratch-off game Emerald 10’s. The winner will spend an evening at The French Laundry, dining on 18 courses created by Chef Thomas Keller and even receiving a special gift from the world-renowned chef and restaurateur. “What better way to celebrate California, our farm-to-fork movement and one of the world’s best restaurants than to offer [players] the ultimate The French Laundry experience,” said the Lottery’s Deputy Director of Corporate Communications, Russ Lopez, in a statement. “If you love food, buy a ticket, take a chance and join the ultimate ‘foodie’ club,” Lopez said. The French Laundry is one of a handful of restaurants in the country to receive three stars from the Michelin Guide, their highest honor. According to their website, the French Laundry “commits itself creating classic French cuisine with the finest quality ingredients, along with a similarly intense focus on impeccable guest service.” The restaurant is in Napa Valley, so the California Lottery will also put the lucky winner up in a spa and resort and transport them to the restaurant (in a BMW) for their unique meal. There’s just one prize to be won, so how do players enter?  First, they’ll have to take a chance on the $10 Emerald 10’s game, which offers chances to win prizes up to $1 million. Then, French Laundry hopefuls should take a selfie with their ticket and write a caption explaining who they would bring along for dinner and why. The contest doesn’t begin until Jan. 5, and the Lottery expects final details for the contest to be released around Jan. 1....

Calif. Mega Millions Winner Collects $180 Million

Sept. 4, 2014 – California’s newest Mega Millions jackpot winner said he felt lucky leading up to the Aug. 22 drawing that changed his life forever. 53-year-old Rick Knudsen won an estimated $180 million that night, and he has his superstitions to thank.  According to Knudsen, the days leading up to the big Mega Millions drawing were full of strange coincidences. On Aug. 21, he said he made five different purchases, and there was absolutely no change involved in any of the transactions – each purchase came out to an even dollar amount. After five even-dollar purchases, Knudsen felt compelled to buy some lottery tickets.  He called himself a “numbers freak,” telling California Lottery officials and members of the media at a press conference Wednesday that, after his five even purchases, “[That all meant] something in my head.  So I said, ‘I gotta stop somewhere and buy a [lottery] ticket.’  So on my way home, I bought the Quick Picks for $10.” Knudsen picked up his winning ticket at the 7-Eleven store located at 301 County Line Road in Calimesa, Calif. The big winner said his strange luck continued through the next day: his first purchase the day of the drawing required no change, and later that evening, in Indio, Calif., another cashier rung him up for $24 exactly. “The clerk… said I should buy a lottery ticket and I said, ‘I already did!'” Knudsen said. Seven transactions over the course of two days, in two different cities.  Anyone superstitious would be looking for a sign of their luck, and later that night, Knudsen certainly saw his superstitions confirmed – but not on the Mega Millions drawing. Not yet, at least.  Knudsen said during his press conference yesterday that before he had checked his ticket – which had already matched the six winning numbers to win $180 million – he met his children at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio. There, Knudsen placed bets on seven different machines, and won on every single one of them....

California Ticket wins Mega Millions Jackpot

Aug. 23, 2014 – The estimated $180 million Mega Millions jackpot finally fell Friday night, won by a single ticket sold in Calif.  The prize was the largest since March and had been growing for nearly two months following a spate of smaller jackpot wins. The lucky numbers that made a new jackpot winner Friday were 5, 31, 34, 41, 74 and the Mega Ball was 3.  The Megaplier drawn was 5x, so players who spent an extra buck on the optional multiplier and won will receive five times the regular prize amounts. According to the California Lottery, the jackpot winner picked up their ticket at the 7-Eleven at 301 County Line Rd. in Calimesa. Once the winner comes forward to claim their prize, they’ll have their choice between the $180 million annuity or the jackpot’s cash value, worth about $107 million before taxes. Along with the jackpot winner, just one other winner, from Pennsylvania, can call themselves a millionaire today.  A ticket sold there matched all five white numbers but missed the Mega Ball, winning a $1 million second prize. Forty-five players were also able to match five of the six winning numbers – four white numbers and the Mega Ball – to win third prizes.  Three of those players added the Megaplier option to their tickets, so their prizes will multiply to $25,000. The other forty-two winners will each receive the normal $5,000 third prize. In all, more than 2.45 million Mega Millions players were able to match a winning combination of the numbers drawn, together raking in more than $6.8 million in non-jackpot winnings. Now that the jackpot has been won, Mega Millions’ top prize will reset to its $15 million starting jackpot, which carries with it a cash value of about $8 million....

Powerball Jackpot Won in California

July 20, 2014 – A single ticket sold in San Bernardino County, Calif. matched all six winning numbers in Saturday’s Powerball drawing to win an estimated $60 million jackpot. The winning numbers drawn Saturday night were 10, 17, 25, 45, 53 and the Powerball was 9.  The Power Play multiplier was 2x, so players who won with Power Play will receive doubled prizes. Saturday’s jackpot winner bought their ticket at the Cardena’s market located at 8963 Sierra Ave., in Fontana, Calif.  The winner will have their choice of an estimated $60 million annuity, or the jackpot’s estimated $35.9 million cash value. No other players were able to match five white numbers Saturday night, so the jackpot winner was the only millionaire made in the drawing. The top non-jackpot winners were the 23 players who matched four white numbers and the Powerball to win third prizes.  Two of those winners had the Power Play option added to their tickets, so their prizes will multiply to $20,000. More than 430,000 other Powerball players won a prize Saturday night, and non-jackpot winners raked in more than $2.7 million altogether. Saturday’s jackpot win reset Powerball’s top prize to its $40 million starting point, which carries a cash value worth about $24.1 million. Wednesday’s winning numbers will be drawn at about 11 p.m. EDT, but Powerball ticket sales close at different times ahead of the drawing, so be sure to get yours before it’s too late.  For a state-by-state list of sales closing times, click here. Mega Millions Prize Still Unclaimed in Calif.

June 10, 2014 – It’s been more than a month since a lucky California lottery player scored a $468,905 second prize playing Mega Millions, but nobody has come forward to claim the big win. The second-prize winning ticket was purchased at San Leandro Express Liquors, located at 138 W. Juana Ave. in San Leandro, Calif. Whoever purchased the ticket was lucky enough to match five of the six winning numbers in the May 9 drawing, missing just the Mega Ball number. The winning numbers drawn that Friday night were 10, 28, 39, 51, 59 and the Mega Ball was 14. Along with the lucky winner in San Leandro, another California ticket sold in Los Angeles also matched the five white numbers drawn.  That ticket was also worth more than $468,000 and was claimed just a few days after the drawing. The San Leandro winner has 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim their nearly half-million dollar prize. In a press release Monday, the California Lottery urged the winner to sign the back of their ticket and keep it in a safe place until they’re ready to come forward and claim the...
