Washington Powerball Winner Claims Jackpot

Dec 05, 14 Washington Powerball Winner Claims Jackpot

Posted by in Lottery News, Powerball, Winner's World

Dec. 5, 2014 – The winner of a $90 million Powerball jackpot came forward Thursday to claim her prize from the Washington Lottery. Lisa Quam told reporters and Lottery staff Thursday the incredible story of her giant win: she made $90 million on the first Powerball ticket she ever purchased. Quam won her prize on the Saturday, Nov. 29 Powerball drawing.  The winning numbers were 13, 24, 30, 42, 48 and the Powerball was 27. The lucky winner said she picked up her ticket while taking a break from Thanksgiving Day cooking.  Quam told the Lottery Thursday that she and her husband ran to the store for a newspaper and pumpkin spice, and unknowingly walked out with $90 million. The couple was considering buying lottery tickets for their children as stocking stuffers.  Though they decided against that purchase, their cashier asked if they’d like to buy a Powerball ticket, and Quam agreed. It wasn’t until Sunday night that Quam checked her first-ever Powerball purchase and realized that her life had changed that weekend. During Thursday’s press conference, Quam said: “I yelled to my family, ‘Get up here!’ They all thought I was mad and angry about something. My daughter asked, ‘Is this an emergency?’ and I said ‘Yes!'” But the best kind of emergency – a life-changing Powerball win.  Quam said she didn’t know what to do at first, and even got up and went to work on Monday, though both she and her husband have now made plans to retire. The couple hasn’t decided what they’ll do with their windfall just yet, nor have they decided whether they’ll take the $90 million annuity or the jackpot’s cash option, which would be worth about $56.8 million before taxes. “We have student loans just like every family.  House repairs; maybe we’ll buy a house for one of the kids,” Quam said. One thing is for sure, though, the big winner is getting herself a new set of wheels.  Quam said Thursday she’s already picked out...

New Jersey Cash4Life Winners Claim Prize

Nov. 25, 2014 – The first-ever winners of a top prize on the New Jersey Lottery’s new Cash4Life game claimed their jackpot Tuesday afternoon at New Jersey Lottery headquarters, about two weeks after the big win. Joseph Ianiro and John Opaluch from Hasbrouck, New Jersey were the lucky winners.  Their Cash4Life ticket matched all six winning numbers drawn Thurs., Nov. 13: 7, 8, 16, 49, 56 and the Cash Ball was 4. Ianiro said he bought the ticket at Nick’s Quick Stop, located at 183 Boulevard in Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.  The lucky winner said he frequently plays the lottery but not normally at that store, which he’s walked by for years. Recent renovations by the store’s new owners must have drawn him in.  He spoke with the new owner, Guy Bernice, then bought the lucky Cash4Life ticket, playing the same numbers as always, which he told the N.J. Lottery were personally significant. Ianiro and Opaluch learned of their luck while watching the news and eating dinner.  According to a Lottery press release, Ianiro started jumping and screaming during a particular news report, and at first Opaluch thought the news story had brought him to his feet. But he soon heard the truth: Ianiro’s winning Cash4Life numbers had scrolled across the bottom of the screen.  After a brief and uncertain search for the winning ticket – Ianiro began to think he hadn’t purchased his lucky numbers that day – they found their lucky ticket. While the top prize for Cash4Life is $1,000 per day for life, the winners chose to take the $7 million cash option for their prize, which will be worth about $5 million after taxes. Ianiro told members of the media and the New Jersey Lottery that he had one specific plan for his windfall: he’ll donate some of the money to an addiction services organization that helped a close friend of his. Ianiro said that friend recently celebrated 25 years of sobriety, saying that if he ever won the lottery, he’d...

Powerball Jackpot Winner Claims Prize in Mo.

Nov. 18, 2014 – The Missouri Lottery announced Monday that the winner of a $202.6 million Powerball jackpot had claimed her prize less than 10 days after hitting the jackpot. Marilyn Boldon was the lucky ticket holder who matched the six winning numbers drawn Sat., Nov. 8.  Those numbers were 9, 19, 33, 38, 54 and the Powerball was 15. Boldon bought her ticket from Gateway Newstands, located at Union Station, 1820 Market St. in St. Louis. That’s a long way from home for the big winner; Boldon is from Dallas, Texas, nearly 700 miles south of the retailer. Boldon has her choice between the full jackpot amount, paid out over about 30 years, or the one-time, lump sum cash payment, worth about $127 million. And she isn’t the only lucky winner with this jackpot – Gateway Newstands will also receive a $50,000 bonus commission for selling the winning ticket. The big win marks the thirtieth Powerball jackpot won in Missouri, the second-most of any state.  According to a Missouri Lottery press release, Powerball jackpot winners have won more than $2.16...

First Cash4Life Winner in New Jersey

Nov. 14, 2014 – After five months without a top-prize winner, New Jersey finally has a $1,000-a-day for life winner with the popular Cash4Life game. The new draw game debuted June 16 in New Jersey and New York.  Since that time, five New York players have matched all six winning numbers to win the game’s top prize, worth $1,000 each day for life – or $365,000 each year. The New Jersey Lottery has not yet announced where the winning ticket was sold.  The big winner matched all six numbers in the Nov. 13 drawing: 7, 8, 16, 49, 56 and the Cash Ball, 4. While this marks the first time that a New Jersey has player won the top prize, the state hasn’t been without its big winners; three New Jersey lottery players have won Cash4Life’s second prize, worth $1,000 each week for life. Despite the lucky streak of top-prize winners this summer, New York has also had just three second-prize winners. Thursday’s lucky winner is the first top-prize winner in either state since July 31.  When they come forward to claim their prize, they’ll have a choice between the $1,000 per-day, for-life prize – which has a minimum payout period of 20 years – or a lump-sum cash option worth $7 million before taxes.   Photo Credit: DeviantArt User 2bgr8stock.  Licensed Under Creative...

October Winners Wrap-up

Nov 03, 14 October Winners Wrap-up

Posted by in Lottery News, Winner's World

Nov. 3, 2014 – October has come and gone, and November is already looking exciting with triple-digit jackpots (or nine-digit, depending on how you look at it) up for grabs on Powerball and Mega Millions. But, just because both jackpots kept rolling through October, don’t think it was an unlucky month for lottery players. Both Powerball and Mega Millions paid out a ton in cash prizes last month, and lots of players won big. Really big.  Millionaire big; Powerball averaged about 2.8 new millionaires per drawing, and Mega Millions was just a bit further behind on the month at about 2.5 new millionaires per drawing. In all, Powerball made 26 new millionaires in October, and Mega Millions produced 22, bringing the total to 48 new millionaires all across the country. That’s only the start of the winnings, however.  Powerball averaged about 440,000 winners in each drawing, and a total of 3.978 million Powerball players won prizes through the month of October. With the Mega Millions jackpot already at $120 million for October 1, players had built up some excitement to fuel ticket-buying.  By the end of the month, 22.87 million players won non-jackpot prizes playing Mega Millions, an average of 2.5 million winners each drawing. All those winners made out pretty well for themselves, too, winning a total of more than $71 million in Mega Millions drawings in October. But as we’re all well aware, nobody won the jackpots.  Tuesday night, an estimated $321 million Mega Millions jackpot will either fall or keep rolling towards this year’s record-high. Then on Wednesday, we’ll see if Powerball can produce another jackpot winner.  If not, the estimated $178 million prize could roll past $200...

Mass. Man Wins Double Lucky for Life Prizes

Oct. 28, 2014 – Kenneth Stokes is the luckiest guy in Norwood, Mass. this week after he picked up not one but two Lucky For Life second prizes last week. On Monday, Oct. 20, Stokes played his regular Lucky for Life numbers, all six representing a birthday for one of his family members. What Stokes forgot was that his family had recently bought him Massachusetts Lottery season tickets with the exact same numbers as those on his fresh new ticket. Tuesday morning, he got a surprising phone call from the Massachusetts Lottery, telling him that his season ticket for Lucky for Life had matched the first five numbers drawn Oct. 20 – Stokes won $25,000 a year for a guaranteed minimum 20 years! While the Lottery’s representative spoke with Stokes, they mentioned that by some coincidence there had been another lucky $25,000-per-year winner in Norwood for that drawing. It wasn’t until after Stokes hung up the phone that he realized just how lucky he was – that second winner was him. According to a Mass Lottery press release, Stokes immediately called back to inform the Lottery rep of his good luck, and claimed his prizes a few days later on Thursday, Oct. 23. Stokes chose the cash option for both of his Lucky for Life second prizes, each worth $390,000 before taxes.  He told the Mass Lottery that he’d be taking the family on a vacation – a nice “thank you” for the season ticket that won half the prize – and the remaining money would help him pay his son’s college tuition and pay off his daughter’s...
