Nov. 14, 2014 – November is flying by; Thanksgiving is right around the corner and the holiday season will reach its fever pitch shortly thereafter. For many lotteries around the country, the holiday season has already begun, bringing with it wintry scratch-offs and big raffle prizes up for grabs. More on that in the Weekly Game News below, but first let’s look back at this week’s Powerball and Mega Millions action.   Weekly Jackpot Update The big news this week comes out of Missouri, where last Saturday one lucky player hit a Powerball jackpot worth an estimated $202 million. That winner hasn’t yet come forward to claim their prize, but when they do they’ll have a choice between the full $202 million jackpot, paid out as an annuity, or a one-time cash payment worth about $126 million before taxes. Tough choice! It was  a good week overall for more than a million other Powerball players, including eight lucky winners who became millionaires after winning second prizes in Saturday or Wednesday’s drawing. Three of those eight winners bought their tickets in Florida.  The other five picked up second prize-winning tickets in North Carolina, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas. The winner in Texas had the extra luck to become a multi-millionaire Wednesday night; their ticket had Power Play added, which automatically multiplies second prizes to $2 million. In all, this week’s Powerball winners raked in more than $16.7 million in non-jackpot prizes.  Ahead of Saturday’s drawing the Powerball jackpot stands at an estimated $50 million, carrying with it a $31 million cash value. Despite a smaller jackpot (thanks to New York’s latest Mega Millions jackpot winner), Mega Millions players are still winning by the millions. More than 2 million Mega Millions players won prizes in the past week, though unfortunately none were lucky enough to score $1 million second prizes. Even so, all those winners together scored about $6 million in non-jackpot prizes as the jackpot rolled over Friday and Tuesday. Ahead of tonight’s drawing,...

Nov. 7, 2014 – Welcome back to the Weekly Review, we’ve got a lot to cover.  The biggest news of all was that the second-biggest jackpot of the year fell to a single winner in New York this week. The estimated $321 million prize has yet to be claimed. In the Weekly Game news section this week, we’re all staring down the holiday season – good or bad – and state lotteries are joining the rush to get the holiday shopping season under way. And LotteryHUB fans, get excited: we opened the entry period for a new Rewards contest just yesterday, and a few contests will be closing soon. Before we get to that, let’s look back at the week in jackpot games.   Weekly Jackpot Update The past week’s jackpot drawings made 17 new millionaires and paid out an impressive total of more than $47 million in non-jackpot prizes.  To get a sense of where this week’s biggest winners were, check out the map below. Everybody knows the biggest jackpot news this week comes from New York.  The jackpot-winning ticket was purchased about an hour north of New York City, at a Valero gas station. When the winner does finally come forward to claim their monster prize, they’ll have a choice between the $321 million annuity – paid out over 29 years – or a lump-sum cash prize worth an estimated $194 million. Along with the big winner there were more than 8.69 million Mega Millions players lucky enough to win a prize in the past week. Mega Millions made 10 millionaires this week.  California and New Jersey each sold three second-prize winning tickets, two more were bought in Texas, and two New Yorkers also won second prizes. One of the second-prize winning tickets in New York also had the Megaplier option added, multiplying that prize to $4 million. With all those new millionaires and millions more winners, it was bound to be a lucrative week for Mega Millions players.  This week’s drawings paid...

Oct. 31, 2014 – Happy Halloween everyone!  It’s the last day of October and, for some, one of the most exciting holidays of the year. This Halloween is a record-breaking one for lottery players – tonight’s Mega Millions jackpot is just the fifth ever to fall on Halloween, and the largest of the five by a whole lot. In Game News this week, one player in Massachusetts beat odds reported as more than 9 trillion to one to win a New England-only draw game. More on that story below, but first, let’s recap the week in Powerball and Mega Millions.   Weekly Jackpot Update Tonight’s Halloween record is an estimated $284 million Mega Millions jackpot, which is carrying a cash value of more than $170 million. The Mega Millions jackpot grew about $60 million in the week’s rollovers, making more than 6.5 million winners along the way. Mega Millions this week were able to rake in about $17.3 million in non-jackpot winnings, including three players lucky enough to win second prizes.  Those $1 million winning tickets were sold in Georgia, Michigan and Missouri. Powerball made a few more millionaires as it worked its way up to an estimated $159 million over the past week.  Second-prize winning tickets were sold in Massachusetts, South Carolina, South Dakota, California and New York. Along with all the new millionaires there were more than 1.04 million other players lucky enough to win a prize, collecting a total of more than $11.6 million in non-jackpot winnings. Saturday’s estimated $159 million jackpot carries with it a $99.9 million cash value, which means that altogether there is nearly $300 million in cash alone up for grabs this weekend. If that sounds incredible, hear this: this weekend’s annuity jackpots add up to an estimated $443 million! With that kind of money on the line, you definitely don’t want to miss your chance to win.  Be sure to pick up your tickets before sales close ahead of the drawings. We’ve got new resources to...

Oct. 24, 2014 – This week could be a game-changer.  New Jersey Governor Chris Christie this week signed a bill that repealed parts of the state’s ban on sports betting. Professional sports leagues and the NCAA quickly filed a complaint in an effort to stop or slow the debut of sports betting in the state, but as of noon Eastern Time, there’s been no word from the court. So what does that mean for the rest of the country?  Check out the Weekly Game News below for more on the sports-betting battle. Before I dive into that situation, let’s cover the big lottery news this week: the BIG jackpots.   Weekly Jackpot Update Tonight’s Mega Millions jackpot has an estimated $224 million value and carries with it a cash option worth nearly $140 million. That is huge.  It’s taken most of the year to get back to such eye-popping levels; there were seven jackpot winners between March and September. Tonight’s jackpot is the second-largest of 2014, and it’s got a ways to go before reaching the record at $414 million.  In the meantime, plenty of Mega Millions players have been winning. In the past week alone, five players have won second prizes, including two new millionaires in Wisconsin and Illinois.  The other three second-prize winners bought their tickets in California, so their prizes varied in amount. Including last Friday’s drawing, a total of more than 5 million Mega Millions players have won non-jackpot prizes, raking in a collective $16.4 million in prize money. Powerball players had a great week, too.  Almost a million players won prizes this week, collecting more than $14.6 million in non-jackpot prize money. Seven players were lucky enough to win second prizes this week, including two players who became multi-millionaires thanks to Power Play. Those two $2 million tickets were sold in Idaho and Pennsylvania for Wednesday’s drawing.  Along with those two winners, players from North Carolina and Texas also matched all five white numbers to win regular $1 million second...

In all, winners in the past week’s Mega Millions drawings raked in about $16 million in non-jackpot prizes. Seven lucky players became millionaires this week: two tickets each from California and New York won second prizes, along with three other winners from Ohio, Missouri and Washington. Powerball players were, on the whole, pretty lucky this week as well;  about 800,000 Powerball players together won more than $11 million in non-jackpot prizes. Five Powerball players became millionaires this week, including one winner in Tennessee who won $2 million with Power Play. The other four second-prize winners bought their tickets in Washington, Rhode Island and Illinois.  Two players from Rhode Island won $1 million prizes in the same drawing and, amazingly, they bought their ticketsat the same place! Ahead of Saturday’s drawing, the Powerball jackpot sits at the $100 million mark, making it likely that more people will start testing their luck on the $2 game.  The cash value for the Powerball jackpot is worth about $62 million. That also means there’s almost $300 million up for grabs in this week’s jackpot drawings, with almost $200 million in combined cash values. If you’re looking for a way to better your odds in this weekend’s drawings, find a few good friends and read this post, it...

About 750,000 Powerball players won prizes this week, winning more than $9.2 million.  Of the three-quarters of a million winners, just three were lucky enough to become new millionaires.
