California Ticket wins Mega Millions Jackpot

Aug 23, 14 California Ticket wins Mega Millions Jackpot

Aug. 23, 2014 – The estimated $180 million Mega Millions jackpot finally fell Friday night, won by a single ticket sold in Calif.  The prize was the largest since March and had been growing for nearly two months following a spate of smaller jackpot wins.

The lucky numbers that made a new jackpot winner Friday were 5, 31, 34, 41, 74 and the Mega Ball was 3.  The Megaplier drawn was 5x, so players who spent an extra buck on the optional multiplier and won will receive five times the regular prize amounts.

According to the California Lottery, the jackpot winner picked up their ticket at the 7-Eleven at 301 County Line Rd. in Calimesa.

Once the winner comes forward to claim their prize, they’ll have their choice between the $180 million annuity or the jackpot’s cash value, worth about $107 million before taxes.

Along with the jackpot winner, just one other winner, from Pennsylvania, can call themselves a millionaire today.  A ticket sold there matched all five white numbers but missed the Mega Ball, winning a $1 million second prize.

Forty-five players were also able to match five of the six winning numbers – four white numbers and the Mega Ball – to win third prizes.  Three of those players added the Megaplier option to their tickets, so their prizes will multiply to $25,000.

The other forty-two winners will each receive the normal $5,000 third prize.

In all, more than 2.45 million Mega Millions players were able to match a winning combination of the numbers drawn, together raking in more than $6.8 million in non-jackpot winnings.

Now that the jackpot has been won, Mega Millions’ top prize will reset to its $15 million starting jackpot, which carries with it a cash value of about $8 million.
