May 29, 2013 – Phyllis and Larry Falcone, a lucky couple from Stallings, N.C., finally have a chance to take a vacation they’ve waited 20 years for after winning a $255,597 jackpot on Carolina Cash 5.
It hasn’t been a month since Phyllis retired as a senior paralegal, who called the Cash 5 ticket “the best investment we’ve ever made,” according to a North Carolina Education Lottery press release.
“We’ve been wanting to go to Italy for 15 or 20 years,” Phyllis said. The couple told the North Carolina Lottery that they plan to use their prize money to pay off bills as well.
As a subscriber to the North Carolina Lottery’s “Lucke-Zone,” Larry received an email May 23 that reported the winning numbers* from the May 22 drawing.
“When I saw those numbers, I thought we might’ve won something because I knew that I had three or four of those numbers,” he said.
Larry kept checking and found out they’d hit the jackpot. After taxes, their winnings came to a total of $173,806.
*Note: Phone calls or e-mails informing you directly that you’ve won the lottery are scams. Lottery scams often ask for a “claiming fee”. State and Multi-state Lottery officials only know where winning tickets were sold, and only after winning numbers are drawn. Winning ticketholders must claim their prizes in person, and there is never a fee required to claim lottery prizes.
